Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. He first developed Pilates exercises during WW1 when he was interned at a prisoner of war camp in Lancaster. He called this system of exercises ‘Contrology’. During his internment he began working with men to help rehabilitate them and return them to a state of overall wellness. Upon returning to Germany, he began working with the military police.
Joseph moved to America in 1923 and opened up a Contrology studio in close proximity to many dance studios and rehearsal halls. It was during this time that he began working with dancers as part of their rehab and training. He continued to have a very successful career as a fitness professional working with a diverse population. He lived until the age of 87.
Joseph Pilates system of exercises continued to influence the fitness industry and became increasingly popular. Eventually people referred to them as ‘Pilates’ exercises. Pilates became mainstream in the 1980’s and more and more people were gravitating to Pilates for its effective approach to health and wellness.
Pilates appeals to individuals with injuries as well as professional athletes and people in between. It is a system of exercises that can be customized to any individual. Pilates continues to make its imprint on the fitness world. Joseph Pilates was a revolutionary and knew it.
